A sedan document box
The sedan document box is known from a number of surviving examples, both in public collections and in private hands. They were used by the travelling officials and placed in front of him resting on the bars of the sedan. Therefore the box has the shape it has.
This one, dating from 17th century, is a very well preserved example. Most of the examples have been stripped from the original patina - this one has a lot of its original atmosphere and the brass mounting has obtained a lovely variety of colours. It is notable that the box is reinforced with brass mounting on all edges, apart from the bottom. This is very rarely seen. No other example mounted in this fashion has so far been published.
Under the cover there is a through-going tray - and under this are three small rooms.
The box measures 67 x 17½ cm, height is 16½ cm.
All the brass mounting is original and the box itself has no substitutes. The inside tray is repaired.
