A classic "picnic box"

Made from fine huanghuali and mounted at corners with yellow brass this fine proportioned tray box - also known in the western world as a "picnic" box is an attractive collectors item.

The bottoms of the trays are - as they should be - made from tieli wood. The maximum height ot the carrier is 21 cm, its length 30½ cm, width is 16. The trays measure 28 x 13½ cm, height 4 cm, height of cover is little less than 3 cm.

This is one of this small size lovely collectibles which are so useful for present days practical use. It is not a box for emtiness - it is a wonderful design of a multi-container for a lot a purposes - and so it has always been.

In the ancient China both men and women used this kind of tray boxes. The men's use was mainly for the stationary items - the women's use was devoted to cosmetic, jewellery and things like that.

This kind of box is reproduced in many woodcuts from daily life dating from the Ming through the Qing period. The present one is of the rarely seen smaller size than avarage.
